"USJ surprised me. I expected a generic theme park and got Super Nintendo World — which is genuinely one of the most immersive experiences I've had anywhere. The attention to detail is extraordinary."
What's at Universal Studios Japan
USJ has several themed zones — Super Nintendo World (unique to Japan), The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Minion Park, Hollywood area and more. The park is consistently ranked among the best in the world and draws over 12 million visitors a year.
Super Nintendo World is the undisputed highlight — a fully realized Mario universe with interactive elements throughout. Guests wear wristbands (Power-Up Bands) that track coins and stamps as you interact with the environment. The main ride, Mario Kart: Koopa's Challenge, has some of the longest queues in the park.
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is the other essential zone — Butterbeer, Ollivanders wand shop, Hogwarts castle and the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey ride are all worth the queue.
Express Pass — Is It Worth It?
On weekends and public holidays, queues for major attractions regularly reach 90–180 minutes. The Express Pass allows you to skip queues for selected rides and is almost always worth buying if you're visiting on a busy day.
Express Passes come in tiers covering different numbers of rides — the 4-ride and 7-ride passes are most popular. They sell out in advance, often weeks ahead. Book online before your visit.
On quiet weekdays, particularly in February–March and October–November, queues are much shorter and an Express Pass may not be necessary.
How to Minimise Queue Times
Arrive at opening time (usually 9am) and head directly to Super Nintendo World or Harry Potter — these fill up first. Allocate timed entry passes for Super Nintendo World as soon as you enter the park (via the USJ app).
Single Rider queues are available for many major attractions and can cut wait times dramatically. You won't sit with your group, but for thrill rides this is usually a worthwhile trade.
Visit the most popular rides in the first two hours, take a break during peak lunchtime (12pm–2pm) and return to popular areas in the late afternoon when some queues shorten.
Getting There
Take the JR Yumesaki Line (Osaka Loop Line connection) from Osaka Station to Universal City Station — 15 minutes, ¥170. The park entrance is a 5-minute walk from the station.
From Shin-Osaka (Shinkansen), take the subway to Nishiumeda and transfer to JR Osaka Station, then the Yumesaki Line. Total journey: about 25 minutes.
